"Behold: The Brotherhood" - February 1971
Writer : Gerry Conway
Artist : Gene Colan
Story:
This issue picks up right where Iron Man 35 left off. (See Hubes' review of the issue for the details.) Iron Man, Daredevil, Nick Fury and Madame Masque are all captives of the Zodiac. Nick Fury is tempted to wield the powerful Zodiac key. He does and transports all involved to the realm where the Zodiac Key originated from. They meet the Priest of Ankh who explains how the key was made. The Brotherhood then wants our heroes to fight the Zodiac with the prize being a place in the Brotherhood. A battle royal ensues. In the end our heroes, but Daredevil especially, refuse to fight. The Brotherhood realizes they cannot achieve the balance they want so they send our heroes back to their own time and place.
What's cool:
While the two groups battle, Iron Man takes on the Spymaster!Any battle between these two is just too cool. Also, the art in this issue is from long time Iron Man artist Gene
Colan who drew IM number 1 and many issues of Tales of Suspense. As in all great 70s comics, the battles scenes are worth the price of admission (I sure wish we could see action like this in today's books).
What's baaad:
The story is a bit confusing. To fully understand, the reader must have some knowledge of Nick Fury's prior relationship with the Zodiac and the Zodiac key. It helps greatly to have read Iron Man #35 beforehand and this story also continues into IM #36 for just a few brief pages. As for Iron Man, he is only featured by himself briefly in the issue.

When Iron Man battles the Spymaster, he does so believing that the Spymaster has killed his friend Jasper Sitwell in a previous issue of Iron Man. When the Spymaster asks if he's going to "Beg off", IM replies: "No Chance Spymaster! There's a little matter of a dying friend we have to settle! A man named Sitwell who's a better man than either of us and who might now be six feet under because of you! So don't worry about motivation, I've got all I need!".
