"Donovan's Brains" - 1990
Writer: Ed Simmons
Penciler: Mark Bagley
Inker: Keith Williams
Story:
Stark Enterprises has concluded a deal with a company called "Donovan Robotics", which has developed a new generation of intelligent robots. These machines have been programmed to learn from their mistakes, just like humans do (except a lot quicker). Stark is very impressed with the prototype robots but what he doesn't know is that Donovan has a hidden agenda. Asking his new partner for Iron Man's protection after a spree of industrial sabotage, Donovan manages to introduce a computer virus into IM's armor. Our hero is forced to shut down all systems for six minutes while the virus is being destroyed and systems reboot. Of course, Donovan has no intention of giving IM the precious minutes he needs and the powerless armored Avenger is immediately attacked by enormous intelligent robots who proceed to give him a beating he won't soon forget.
What's cool:
Although the story is entertaining, the art is what makes this one special. I don't know about you guys, but I really like Mark Bagley (New Warriors, Amazing Spider-Man, Thunderbolts). It's great to see the talented Bagley tackle our favourite character. On top of that, another story in this issue also features Iron Man. Part 6 of the "Stardust Miseries" storyline features Iron Man, Hank Pym and the Beast against an old friend turned foe; Wonder Man (under the Enchantress's spells). It's a cool IM versus Wondy face-off that old fans of the West Coast Avengers will enjoy. Cool issue, I'll skip the "What's Bad" category with this one because I can't really think of anything (it was going to happen eventually) ;-)

Iron Man says: "I'll shut down all power except the bootstrap module and play dead. If this doesn't work, I won't have to fake it." (Well? Will it work? You have to read the story to know the answer to that!).
