"The other way out" - 1990
Writer: Steve Saffel
Penciler: Mark Bright
Inker: Don Heck
Story:
Stark is working in his office when he suddenly hears on the television that the communist government of some eastern Asian country (can you tell the author doesn't want to write the word "China") has announced the execution of twelve pro-democracy demonstrators. Tony looks at the screen in shock and hurries out of his office, asking Mrs. Arbogast to cancel all his appointments as he hovers by her desk (he was stuck in his hoverchair at the time). Strapping on the enormous reactors he used once before during the Armor Wars to reach Russia, Iron Man heads for Asia as quickly as he can. After ruthlessly attacking the red army, he reaches the place of the execution… only a second too late. He takes a body in his arms and heads for the outside of the city where the mortally wounded man tells him: "Tell Tony… good bye for me, I'm glad he got out earlier… the safer way…"
What's cool:
What's cool you ask? What's cool? I'll tell ya what's cool! Mark Bright is cool! The man's only one of the very best pencilers to have ever drawn Iron Man!!The art is awesome, even with a mediocre inker, Bright rocks! No wonder he was so hot when he was working with a guy like Bob Layton. Mark Bright is the king, that's the guy I want to see coming back to work on the IM monthly book! Layton's a great inker but he needs a great penciler to be at his best (in my most humble opinion) and I think Mark Bright is the man for the job! Okay… calm down Pat… you're hyperventilating again ;-) Two of the three other stories aren't half bad either, the Wolverine story (drawn by Rob Liefeld sadly) features a character old Alpha Flight fans like me will fondly remember: Wild Child. There's also a story about a vastly underused character; Le Peregrine, France's answer to Hawkman. In this particular story, he has to deal with Stane International, no less.
What's baaad:
Well, although the art is awesome (did I already mention that I like Mark Bright?), and the story is cool, one thing REALLY made me mad. Nobody took the time to tell us who the heck was that Asian guy Iron Man rescued! Oh there's an asterisk all right, but that's all! No footnote to explain anything! Who is he? A character from one of Iron Man's previous adventures in Asia? Which issue? Nobody knows… that just sucks. If any of you guys think you may have the answer to this enigma, you be sure to send me a message, y'hear?

Mrs. Arbogast says: "Drat, Mr. Trump isn't going to like being put off again." (Don't you miss that woman? Because I most certainly do!).
