MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #78

"Games" - 1991

Writer: Doug Murray

Artist: Ken Steacy

Story:
Jim Rhodes is playing around with an illegal Avengers computer game he got off an on-line bulletin board, but what he doesn't know is that the bloody thing is infected with a particularly nasty computer virus. When Tony downloads information into his armor computer, the virus finds itself messing up with Iron Man's systems. Soon, one of his boot jets stops functioning just as our hero is flying above Disneyland. Completely out of control, how can Iron Man hope to land safely without hurting anyone, including himself?

What's cool:
I looooooove Ken Steacy… make sure you read my reviews of the three Marvel Fanfare issues he painted some years ago (available with A.I. #53)! This MCP issue isn't painted though, but the art is still great and Iron Man looks awesome. Also, all of you who have been to Disneyland will recognize the rides Iron Man crashes into, there's a very good respect for detail (too funny when IM comes face-to-face with the abominable snowman from that White Mountain roller coaster ride, or when he grabs the Excalibur prop from "The Sword in the Stone" to try to slow himself down). We haven't seen an author and an artist have so much fun with IM like that for waaaaay too long!

On top of that, the three other stories featured in this issue of MCP are very good. One of them features Wolverine in the sixth part of the Weapon X storyline, a masterpiece written and drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith. Another one features Selene (the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club) going into a bar and hitting on a big guy who turns out to be the Grey Hulk. Finally, the lesser of the four, a team-up between Sgt Fury's Howling Commandos and Count Dracula during WW II.

Quote:

A little girl who sees IM grab hold of the Excalibur prop and accidentally pull it loose from the stone asks her father: "Look at that, dad! Does that mean he's the king of England now?"
