AVENGERS WEST COAST #61

«The Immortus Imperative» - August 1990

Story: Roy & Dann Thomas

Penciler: Paul Ryan

Inker: Danny Bulanadi

Story:
When Immortus teleports the Avengers West in limbo, he pits them against the latest version of his Legion of the Unliving.Every Avenger is thus faced with one opponent that is in some way connected to his past or his future. You guessed it, Iron Man must battle Arno Stark, the Iron Man of 2020. Arno makes the first move with his superior and more technologically advanced armor. He throws one of his hip blades which slices through Tony's shoulder unit like butter. He the proceeds to punch him through a wall and serve him a face full of repulsor rays, 2020 style!

Tony is taking one heck of a beating. His armor is sliced up and cracking like an eggshell. But as Arno walks towards him, boasting, Tony musters all his strength and thinks to himself: "Well, so what if I AM (obsolete) - at least in HIS era? I'm still the ORIGINAL Iron Man and this clown - moving in for the kill - is just a copy!" Tony then puts his fists together and knocks his enemy out with a powerful thrust to the head.

What's cool:
All in all, a cool comic with cool art. I like Ryan, he reminds me of John Byrne. This issue is part of a bigger storyline that fans of the Avengers Forever miniseries and of alternate realities will enjoy, I think. The AWC team had a cool roster at that particular point in time. It included IM of course, Henry Pym, the Wasp, Hawkeye, Wonder Man, U.S. Agent, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Can't really go wrong with cool characters like that. I've always liked Kang and Immortus too (The Crossing not withstanding).

And yes, the main reason that makes this issue enjoyable is the fact that, in its pages, for the very first time ever, Iron Man meets Iron Man of 2020 face to face. Even thought the fight between the two isn't given much space in the book and even though it's a bit short, it's still enjoyable. Personally, I think a meeting like that deserves a whole comic to play itself out.

Quote:

During the fight, Arno says: "Face facts unc… you're like some primitive stealth bomber up against a star raker from MY day! By the way, I got 'hold of this armor the old-fashioned way. I bought it!"
