Covers: Alex Ross

Story:
This series serves as prelude to PARADISE X, the third instalment in Alex Ross' futuristic trilogy that began with EARTH X and UNIVERSE X. The robot X-51, formerly known as Machine Man, now resides in the Watcher's HQ on the moon. He has become aware of a terrible danger threatening humanity. At the very core of the Earth resides a Celestial embryo whose birth will trigger the end of the world. On the Earth of this reality, the embryo has been eliminated thanks to the intervention of Reed Richards and his son. But many alternate realities are still at risk and that's where the Heralds come in.

Plucked from many different realities by X-51, they are Wolverine (from the Days of Future Past, in which all the heroes are murdered by the Sentinels), Hyperion (from another Earth where an untrusting populace has wiped out its own heroes), Spider-Girl (Peter Parker's future teenage daughter), Deathlok (the futuristic cyborg), Killraven (from a future ravaged by the War of the Worlds), Bloodstorm (the X-Man Storm turned into a vampire by Dracula) and last but not least, none other than Arno Stark, the Iron Man of 2020.

Arno's first meeting with Wolverine is less than friendly, as he proudly announces: "Where I come from, the mutants were already dead and buried… a footnote, at best" to which Wolvie replies with a smile: "So yer the next Iron Man? Guess ya've got to have some sort of heart problem to wear the suit." X-51 sends them travelling into different alternate realities where their mission is to warn that reality's Reed Richards against the impending danger looming over their planet. In exchange for this, X-51 promises to reward his Heralds by granting them what they all truly desire. Stark and Bloodstorm are paired up and find themselves in a world where the entire Earth's population has been turned into bloodthirsty vampires. And that's just the beginning…

What's cool:
Awesome, absolutely awesome. The covers, like every other piece Alex Ross signs, are simply breathtaking with detail and realism. It's like seeing your favourite heroes come to life in front of you. The story is a lot of fun. I love alternate realities and Arno is one cool character, so mix it all up and what you get is a great read and one heck of a ride! The interaction between the characters is brilliant and adds all the extra spice to this already great series. Truly, it has to be seen to be believed. I personally greatly disliked EARTH X and UNIVERSE X (I know, I know, I must be just about the only one)… but the sheer excellence of this prelude has convinced me to give the last chapter, PARADISE X, a shot.

Quote:

X-51 says: "For you, Arno, the opportunity to get out from your uncle's shadow can finally begin. Here, you'll be able to make a name for yourself."
